Workshop 8: Children’s Rights and the Media

Drawing upon his extensive experience in running media monitoring projects in Africa William Bird will demonstrate how monitoring the media can help in promoting media literacy and media advocacy. The session will also introduce the proposed SIGNIS Children and the News Media global media monitoring project in which children in different countries will monitor how the media portray and report about them.

William Bird is Director of Media Monitoring Africa (MMA), based in South Africa. MMA has run over 95 media monitoring projects on subjects ranging from gender based violence, HIV, and racism to children and the media and the SABC. In his spare time William likes to monitor the media, and as a father has already introduced his son to the world of media monitoring.
